Pete Yorn @ Rhino Records

Pete Yorn's third album Nightcrawler comes out in August. To promote this record, Yorn performed last Tuesday at Rhino records in Claremont California.

The email I got at 12pm said the set started at 5, so I showed up at 5:15. The email I didn't get, because I left at 5, said it would start at 5:30.

I ended up only watching a few songs because he didnt start playing until quarter of. The new stuff seems like more of the same. I got kind of annoyed half way through the first song because I realized that the new album would be overproduced crap like the rest of his records.

I like Pete Yorn. I hear a little Bruce Springsteen in him. And not just because he's from New Jersey. He's a pretty good songwriter and has a decent voice, but his records end up sounding so much like every other John Mayer on the radio that I feel let down.

I would really love it if his records sounded like Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska and what's wrong with that? Just him and his acoustic guitar. That's how I saw him on Tuesday. I assume that's how he writes music. I don't know I just feel like there's a lot of bullshit surrounding him that needs to be stripped away. So Nebraska is the way to go. Yorn and a 4 Track. Nebraska is a way better record than anything Guster or Dave Matthews has released.

So Pete Yorn's new stuff doesnt sound awful, but on record may be a different story. Also he covered The Smiths' There Is a Light That Never Goes Out and the rest of the audience looked utterly confused. When he introduced the song by saying I just learned this the other day and stared up at a picture of Morrissey while playing, I heard someone near me say "Is this a cover?"

I've seen Yorn cover Morrissey before. And something about it really works. I don't know if its the whiney-ness or something more, but I like it.

Anyway, I prolly won't be buying Nightcrawler. How many records was it before Springsteen made Nebraska?
