Located in downtown Claremont, The Folk Music Center has been an important part of the town as well as the Southern California folk music scene. Opened in 1958 by Charles and Dorothy Chase, The Folk Music Center has drawn artists such as John Fahey, Doc Watson, and Gary Davis.
The center is now owned by The Chases' grandson, folk musician Ben Harper. Harper a native of the Inland Empire area, owes much of his musical education to the Folk Music Center. It was at the center that he was discovered by Blues artist Taj Mahal. So impressed by young Harper, Mahal asked Harper to go on tour with him.
Ben Harper is currently on tour with Dave Matthews Band and has recored 5 albums for the Virgin record label.
